Scotty McCreery Co-Hosts 9/18

Lon’s co-host this week is Scotty McCreery.  His fifth album, Same Truck, is available Friday September 17: “If you told me ten years ago that I’d still be able to make music and be on my 5th album, I would have taken that deal in a heartbeat. We’re having so much fun right now.”

Of course it actually has been ten years since Scotty won American Idol.  Lon asked why things have fallen into place these last few years: “I could talk on this for a while! Starting off on such a high, it was crazy.  I was so young.  As I’ve gotten older, and experienced love and loss, I have lived that life and have those stories to tell.  I had to live life to learn that.”

Scotty was inspired to write his current hit from an experience with his wife: “This was a pre-pandemic song. My wife was a pediatric nurse. The way our scheduled lined up, when I was on the road, she was at home, and when I was off, she was at the hospital.  So I wanted more time with her.  Then the world stopped, and we got to see a whole lot of each other.”

Scotty wrote all but two of the songs on his new album.  One of them was just released this past week called “Damn Strait.” Scotty says, “I heard this song, and I had a mini-freakout session.  I played it for my wife and friends, and they had the same reaction. I’m a massive George Strait fan, and I love this song.”

Lon then pointed out that he didn’t expect Scotty to sing a song with the word ‘damn’ in it.  Scotty replied, “It was a conversation. But we loved this song.  I probably wouldn’t have done it 6 years ago, but it’s a song I’m proud to put my name on, and I’m proud to sing.  I hope people like it as much as I do.”

Scotty has been on the road this year with Old Dominion, and he says they have a way to relax after a show: “We have a little firepit by the buses, and we all hang out and shoot the breeze with a cigar and a glass of wine or something.  That’s become my new passion during the pandemic.  I go on the back porch, read a book, and have a cigar.”

Scotty also has great stories this week about Luke Combs, Darius Rucker, Kenny Chesney, Jimmie Allen, and Brad Paisley.

NEXT WEEK: Jameson Rodgers
